The Nashville Predators Foundation distributed 109 grants totaling $260,000 to Nashville and Middle Tennessee-based community service and charitable organizations including HomeSafe’s Wilson County program, a shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

The grants were presented during a ceremony held April 6 at the Sommet Center in Nashville.

This announcement marks the 11th grant distribution by the Predators Foundation.

“Predators Foundation President Gerry Helper said, “This year, it is even more imperative to give as much as possible, with charity organizations dealing with the economic challenges as much as any organization. We’d especially like to thank our fans and partners for continuing to support our fund-raising efforts.”

Upon reviewing hundreds of grant applications, and in keeping consistent with the Foundation’s mission, the grant committee selected programs that will primarily benefit children.

Sheri Curry, director of HomeSafe’s Wilson County program, accepted the grant. She noted “the grant money will be used to construct a play area for the children we serve in our shelter. HomeSafe would like to thank the Nashville Predators for their support.”

Domestic Violence Advocate Receives Scholarship

HomeSafe’s Sumner County Advocate to attend state-wide academy

Gallatin, TN, May 12, 2009:  Shannon Lynch, Advocate for HomeSafe’s domestic violence program in Gallatin, has received a full scholarship to attend the 2009 Senator Tommy Burks Victim Assistance Academy in June. The Academy is hosted by the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.

The purpose of the Academy is to provide training to victim advocates. The 40 hour curriculum will encompass a variety of subjects including domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and working with rural victims. The week-long academy will bring together victim advocates from across the state who work for domestic violence and sexual assault programs as well as law enforcement and district attorney’s offices.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me to learn from other agencies and build on the training I’ve received through HomeSafe,” says Lynch, who has worked with HomeSafe for the past year.

Upon completion of the academy, Lynch will be eligible for national advocate credentialing through the National Organization for Victim Assistance.

“Shannon is an outstanding advocate for victims of domestic violence;” says Jyl Shaffer, HomeSafe’s Sumner County Director and Lynch’s supervisor, “her passion for making Sumner County a violence-free community will only increase with this opportunity.”
